I learned that the aggro matchups were favored, but the inclusion of Lightning Helix made Bolt mirrors nigh unlosable. More motivated than usual, I ran UWR Twin against the gauntlet. If you’ve ever had a Gatekeeper of Malakir kicked on you in Legacy, it was probably our fault. The last time we worked together we both Top 8’d with some innovations on Deadguy Ale, for example. We rarely collaborate, but when we do we perform well. I also liked the idea of working with Joe. On the plus side, we now have more combo pieces to work with, making up the gap in win conditions. After all, I remember winning a lot of matches with that guy, and Jace’s power level is largely why the deck could take on the control role so well. The loss of Jace was my main concern at first. Since the Modern metagame is so different, and Jace is banned, we couldn’t manage a direct port. Back then, the field bristled with Jund, Scapeshift, and Faeries, though you also had to beat Naya Zoo and the occasional control mirror. I can’t take credit for the original archetype, but this is the list that I Top 8’d a PTQ and cashed Grand Prix Atlanta with. At one point, Joe suggested a more controlling, Wall of Omens-style list, similar to what I’d run in GP Atlanta several years before.
